My work is play. And I play when I design. I even looked it up in the dictionary, to make sure that I actually do that, and the definition of 'play,' number one, was 'engaging in a childlike activity or endeavor,' and number two was 'gambling.' And I realize I do both when I'm designing.

I spent some time getting to know various homeless people I passed on a regular basis on 42nd St. These were deep, emotional characters with great stories to tell. After some time, and inspired by my favorite photographer Diane Arbus, I'd ask if I could take some photographs of them. They were happy to oblige. I think they were hungry to be seen again.
The process of ideation I've been using most often has been described by Maltese philosopher Edward DeBono, who suggests starting to think about an idea for a particular project by taking a random object as point of departure. This method forces the brain to start out at new and different points of departure, preventing it from falling into a familiar groove it has formed before.. -- STEFAN SAGMEISTER
